Erechtites valerianifolius (Brazilian fireweed) is a species in the Asteraceae family, native to regions across Central and South America, including Brazil, Colombia, and surrounding areas. It is also naturalized in parts of the Old World tropics. The species was first described in 1838 and is commonly found in diverse ecosystems. In taxonomic discussions, it has been linked to the name Senecio boninsimae, with a detailed drawing serving as the lectotype due to the absence of physical specimens.

Description

Erechtites valerianifolius is a member of the Asteraceae (sunflower) family and is widely distributed in tropical regions of the Americas. It is known by the common name Brazilian fireweed and has been recorded in numerous parks and protected areas in Colombia, as well as in various other South American countries. The species has also been reported in the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of the United States, including Hawaii. Taxonomically, it has been associated with the name Senecio boninsimae, which was typified using a detailed illustration due to the lack of physical specimens. The species is recognized for its ability to thrive in disturbed habitats and is considered a weed in many regions.
