Saponaria officinalis L., known as Bouncing Bet, is a perennial plant in the Caryophyllaceae family. It is native to regions including Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia, and parts of Europe and South America. The species was first described in 1753. Common names for this plant also include common soapwort, crow soap, and soapweed. There are approximately 20 species in the Saponaria genus.
Description
Saponaria officinalis is widely distributed across North America, Europe, and parts of South America. It is a member of the Caryophyllaceae, or carnation, family. The species was originally published by Linnaeus in 1753. Ghazanfar & Nasir later designated material from Clifford as type, though this choice was made after an earlier designation by Schultz. The plant is known by several common names, including Bouncing Bet, and is one of around 20 species in the Saponaria genus.
