Menyanthes trifoliata, commonly known as Bog Buckbean, is a flowering plant species in the Menyanthaceae family. It is the sole member of the Menyanthes genus. The plant is found in regions including Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, and parts of Canada and the United States, as well as in Portugal and other areas of the Nearctic, Oriental (Indomalaya), and Palaearctic regions. The North American variant is sometimes classified as Menyanthes trifoliata var. minor Michx.

Description

Menyanthes trifoliata is a herbaceous plant that typically grows in wetland habitats such as bogs and marshes. It is characterized by its trifoliate leaves and clusters of white or pinkish flowers. The species has been documented since 1753 and is known by several common names, including bogbean, marsh trefoil, and buckbean. Its distribution spans a wide range of northern latitudes, reflecting its preference for cooler climates.
