Boehmeria virgata is a member of the Urticaceae family, commonly known as the nettle family. It has a wide native distribution spanning tropical Africa, the western Indian Ocean, tropical and subtropical Asia, and extending to Australia and the Pacific. The species was initially described in 1786 as Urtica virgata by Georg Forster and was later reclassified under the genus Boehmeria by Guill in 1837. It is found in various regions including Angola, Assam, Bangladesh, Borneo, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, the Caroline Islands, the Central African Republic, China (South-Central and Southeast), the Comoros, the Congo, East Himalaya, Ethiopia, Fiji, Gabon, and Ghana.
