Eleocharis obtusa (Willd.) Schult., commonly known as blunt spike rush, is a Cyperaceae species found in wet habitats across Canada, the United States, and parts of Europe and Italy. It is an annual plant reaching up to half a meter in height, with cylindrical, spongy stems and grasslike, straw-colored leaves at the base. The plant produces spikelets with ten or more flowers, each enclosed in a brown, oval bract.
Description
Eleocharis obtusa is native to regions including Newfoundland, British Columbia, and parts of the United States, as well as Belgium, Italy, and Portugal. It thrives in moist environments like riverbanks and forest floors and is occasionally a weed in rice paddies, particularly during early growth stages. The plant features erect, weak stems and rounded or oblong spikelets at the stem tips. It was first published in 1824.
