Hyacinthoides non-scripta, commonly known as bluebell, is a bulbous perennial plant native to Atlantic regions from the north-western Iberian Peninsula to the British Isles. It is also cultivated in gardens. The plant is characterized by a one-sided inflorescence of 5–12 violet–blue, sweet-scented flowers with recurved tepals and 3–6 long, linear basal leaves. It is distinguished from other species by its nodding inflorescence and is sometimes called the English bluebell or common bluebell.
Description
Hyacinthoides non-scripta (L.) Chouard ex Rothm. is a member of the Asparagaceae family. It is native to and distributed across regions such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Norway, Belgium, and others in Europe. The species is known for its spring blooming period and is often found in woodland habitats. The plant is distinguished by its one-sided, nodding inflorescence of tubular, violet–blue flowers and long, linear leaves. It is sometimes confused with other species, such as the harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), particularly in Scotland, where the term 'bluebell' may refer to the harebell.
