The species reproduces via pseudogamous apomixis, a method that does not involve fertilization. It was first described in 1931 by Stearn. The plant is distributed in areas such as Bulgaria, China South-Central, China Southeast, and various U.S. states including Vermont, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.
