Pterocarpus angolensis, known as Bleedwood tree, is a species native to southern Africa. It is found in Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. The species is protected in South Africa. It is also referred to as Kiaat, a term of Afrikaans origin, and in Zimbabwe as Mukwa or Mubvamaropa.

Description

Pterocarpus angolensis belongs to the Fabaceae family and was first described in 1825. Its distribution spans several countries in southern Africa, including Botswana, Caprivi Strip, KwaZulu-Natal, Malawi, Northern Provinces, Zaïre, and others. The tree is notable for its local names and regional significance. In South Africa, it is a protected species, highlighting its ecological and cultural importance.
