Bunium bulbocastanum L., known as black zira, is a species in the Apiaceae family. It was historically used as a root vegetable in western Europe and has been referred to as great pignut or earthnut.

Description

Bunium bulbocastanum is a member of the carrot family, Apiaceae, and is native to regions including Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Portugal, Finland, Norway, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, and others. It was previously cultivated as a root vegetable in parts of western Europe and is known by the common names great pignut and earthnut. The species was first described in 1753.
