Glaucium corniculatum, known as black-spot horned-poppy, is a member of the Papaveraceae family. This annual flowering plant is found in regions such as Madeira, Portugal, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and parts of Eastern Europe, as well as in North America and Central Asia. It typically grows to a height of 30 cm and is characterized by its hairy stem and leaves. The plant produces red flowers with a black spot at the base of the tepal bract and a yellow margin, blooming from June to August. The capsule fruit is covered with stiff hairs.
Description
Glaucium corniculatum is an annual plant in the poppy family (Papaveraceae). It is distributed across southern Europe, including Portugal, France, and Spain, as well as in parts of Eastern Europe, North America, and Central Asia. The plant has a hairy stem and leaves and reaches a height of about 30 cm. Its flowers are red, with a distinctive black spot on the base of the tepal bract, which is bordered by a yellow margin. The flowering period occurs from June to August. The fruit is a hairy capsule. The species was first described in 1789.
