Description

Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels is a member of the Myrtaceae family, commonly called Black Plum. It is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The tree can reach 30 m in height and has a lifespan exceeding 100 years. It is cultivated for its fruit, timber, and ornamental qualities but is considered invasive in several regions. The earliest type specimen was designated by Kostermans from material in Herb. Hermann 1: 41 (BM). Scott later proposed a different type, but it was later invalidated as the collection could not be identified as S. cumini. Verdcourt later restricted the type to one of the specimens on Hermann's sheet.
