Nigella sativa L., a member of the Ranunculaceae family, is an annual flowering plant native to western Asia and eastern Europe. It has become naturalized in parts of Europe, northern Africa, and as far east as Myanmar. The plant is used as a spice in various food preparations.

Description

Nigella sativa L. is part of the genus Nigella and is commonly known as black caraway. It is distributed across several regions, including Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Great Britain, and others in Europe, as well as parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. The species was first published in 1753. Strid has provided a detailed review of earlier typification attempts for this name.
