Description

Citrullus colocynthis is a poisonous plant commonly referred to as bitter apple, colocynth, bitter cucumber, vine of Sodom, or wild gourd. It belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family and is native to the Mediterranean Basin and West Asia. The species is found in regions such as Ontario, São Miguel Island, Spain, Bulgaria, Hungary, and parts of the United States. It is important to note that the type specimen for this species is not the collection numbered 1152.1 (LINN), as it lacks the relevant Species Plantarum number and was added to the herbarium after 1753, thus not representing the original material for the name.
