Sidalcea pedata, known as birdfoot checkerbloom, is a rare perennial herb native to California. It is found primarily in the San Bernardino Mountains, including areas like Bear Valley and Bluff Lake, at elevations between 1500 and 2100 meters. The plant blooms from May to July and is adapted to moist meadows, open woodlands, and pebble plains. Its habitat is threatened by development, vehicle traffic, and grazing in the recreational area of Big Bear Valley.

Description

Sidalcea pedata (Malvaceae) is an endemic species of California. It is found in limited locations within the San Bernardino Mountains. The plant grows in moist meadows, open woodlands, and the unique pebble plain habitat. Due to its restricted range and threats from human activity, it is considered rare and endangered. The species was first described in 1887 by A. Gray.
