Bay cedar
Suriana maritima L.
Suriana maritima L., known as bay cedar, is a species in the family Surianaceae. It was first described in 1753 and is native to regions across the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The species is monotypic, meaning the genus Suriana contains only this single species. It has been cited in various botanical works, including as a lectotype by Malik in 1984, though earlier typification efforts by Basak predate this. A name previously published in 1762, T. suffruticosa, was later synonymized with S. maritima due to typification using a Sloane illustration that was part of the original description of S. maritima.
