Barnyard Grass

Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P.Beauv. is a grass species in the Poaceae family. It was previously classified under the genus Panicum. The species is native to tropical Asia and has been reported in regions such as Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia, and other parts of North America, as well as in Portugal and several Atlantic islands. The plant is characterized by its tall, upright or spreading stems, long flat leaves with purplish bases, and prominent purplish seed heads. The spikelets contain large seeds that resemble millet. The specific epithet was originally spelled 'Crusgalli' in the protologue. First described in 1812, it is widely recognized by names such as Barnyard Grass, cockspur, and water grass.
