Bromus hordeaceus L., commonly known as Barley Brome, is a species in the grass family (Poaceae). It is an annual or biennial grass found in regions including Madeira, Portugal, Belgium, France, Great Britain, and parts of North America. The species was first described in 1753. Taxonomic discussions have occurred regarding its nomenclature, including a proposal for rejection by Lambinon (1981), which was not accepted by the Committee for Spermatophyta (1986). Smith (1985) attempted to designate a neotype but this was later found to conflict with the Vienna Code and was corrected in 2000.
Description
Bromus hordeaceus is a grass species native to Europe and parts of North America. It is known by several common names, including Barley Brome, soft brome, bull grass, soft cheat, and soft chess. It belongs to the genus Bromus within the family Poaceae. The species has a wide distribution, occurring in regions such as Madeira, Portugal, Belgium, France, Great Britain, and parts of North America. Taxonomic discussions have focused on the validity of the name, with Lambinon proposing its rejection in 1981, which was not accepted by the Committee for Spermatophyta in 1986.
