Scirpus ancistrochaetus, known as Barbed Bristle Bulrush, is a species in the Cyperaceae family. It is native to the northeastern United States from New Hampshire to Virginia and was previously found in Quebec. The plant is rare and is threatened by wetland habitat loss and degradation. Once thought to be extirpated from New York, it was rediscovered in Steuben County in 2010. It is listed as an endangered species at the federal level.

Description

Scirpus ancistrochaetus is a member of the Cyperaceae family, commonly referred to as Barbed Bristle Bulrush. Its native range includes the northeastern United States from New Hampshire to Virginia. The species was once present in Quebec but is now considered extirpated there. It was also presumed extirpated in New York, but a population was found in Steuben County in 2010. The plant faces significant threats due to the loss and degradation of its wetland habitat. It is classified as an endangered species under federal protection.
