It is typically found in coastal strand habitats, often growing on coral exposures and exposed to salt spray. The species was first described in 1901 by Mez. Its distribution includes the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Florida, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Archipiélago de Cuba.
