It is grown in regions such as South Sudan, Togo, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, India, and Ivory Coast. The species was first described in 1980.
