The nomenclatural history of the species is complex, involving changes from Lysimachia monnieri L. (1756) to Gratiola monnieri (L.) L. (1759), and eventually to its current name in the genus Bacopa. Linnaeus's intent was clarified through later revisions and neotypification under Art. 9.8 due to the lack of original material.
Description
Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst. is a creeping herb found in wetland habitats around the world. It is a member of the Plantaginaceae family and is known by the common name bacopa. The species was first described in 1891. The taxonomic history of the species is rooted in Linnaean nomenclature, with the original name Lysimachia monnieri L. (1756) later moved to the genus Gratiola as G. monnieri (L.) L. (1759). Linnaeus later revised the name to G. 'monnieria' in a reprint. The species was eventually transferred to the genus Bacopa. Cramer designated a Browne figure as the type, and due to the absence of original material, this was treated as a neotypification under Art. 9.8. The species is recognized as homotypic with its basionym and has been the subject of various taxonomic interpretations.
