Virola surinamensis, known as baboonwood, is a species in the Myristicaceae family. It is found in Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, as well as naturalized in the Caribbean. The species grows in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, swamps, and degraded former forests. Though listed as threatened due to habitat loss by the IUCN, it is a common tree in Central and South America.

Description

Virola surinamensis (Warb.) is a flowering plant in the Myristicaceae family. It is native to Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, and has been introduced to the Caribbean. The species inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, swamps, and heavily degraded former forest areas. Despite being classified as threatened due to habitat loss by the IUCN, it remains a widespread and common tree species in Central and South America.
