Attalea speciosa, known as the babassu palm, is a species of palm native to the Amazon rainforest in South America. It is the dominant species in the Maranhão Babaçu forests in the states of Maranhão and Piauí. The palm is widely distributed across several regions in Brazil and neighboring countries.

Description

This palm species belongs to the Arecaceae family and was first described in 1826 by Mart. It is commonly found in the Amazon region, with a distribution spanning from Brazil's northeastern and northern regions to the west-central and southeastern parts of the country, as well as Bolivia, Suriname, and other global locations.
