Austrobaileya scandens is the only species in the genus Austrobaileya and the sole member of the plant family Austrobaileyaceae, making both the genus and family monotypic. It belongs to the basal angiosperm families, representing one of the most ancient groups of flowering plants. Endemic to the Wet Tropics bioregion of Queensland, Australia, it is found in well-developed upland rainforest. First described in 1933 by C.T. White, the species is known by the common name austrobaileya.
