Casuarina equisetifolia L. is a species in the family Casuarinaceae, native to Australia, New Guinea, Southeast Asia, and India. It is a monoecious tree with scaly or furrowed bark, drooping branchlets, and reduced leaves in whorls of 7 or 8. The fruit is 10–24 mm long and contains winged seeds (samaras) 6–8 mm long. The species was first published in 1759.
Description
Casuarina equisetifolia L., commonly known as Australian beefwood, is a member of the Casuarinaceae family. It is a small to medium-sized tree with distinctive, whorled branchlets and reduced scale-like leaves. The bark is scaly or furrowed on older trees. The species produces samaras (winged seeds) within its fruit. It is native to Australia, New Guinea, Southeast Asia, and India. The name C. equisetifolia was validly published in 1759, while C. litorea L. is not validly published under the rules of botanical nomenclature. The species is sometimes called coastal she-oak, horsetail she-oak, ironwood, beach sheoak, beach casuarina, whistling tree, or Australian pine.
