Astelia banksii, known as coastal astelia or kowharawhara in Māori, is an evergreen plant native to the beaches of New Zealand. It is found in the northern regions of the country. The plant features white to pale green flowers in spring and produces purple-black berries in autumn. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and in fertile, well-drained soil.

Description

Astelia banksii belongs to the family Asteliaceae and the genus Astelia. It was first described in 1837 by A.Cunn. The plant is commonly found in coastal areas and is part of the natural vegetation in regions like Wellington, Kapiti Island, Kawhia, and Tauranga. It is a low-maintenance species suitable for gardens with appropriate light and soil conditions.
