Description

The species was first described by Müller-Argoviensis in 1860, based on a gathering by Sellow. The type specimen was later lectotypified as the best-preserved sheet from Sellow B 1645 - c 77? in the BR herbarium. The collection by Sellow is believed to have occurred between 1818 and 1820. Earlier taxonomic work by Woodson (1951) cited the same gathering but did not specify the herbarium of deposition. The name A. australe has been treated in subsequent taxonomic discussions, including clarification of nomenclatural issues following the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN).
