Murdannia spirata, known as Asiatic dewflower, is a tropical plant native to regions in Asia, including China, India, and Southeast Asia, as well as Pacific islands. It has been naturalized in Florida since its first recorded collection in the wild in 1965. The plant thrives in wet environments such as forests, wastelands, and streamside areas in its native range, and in Florida it has been found in palm hummocks and marshes, particularly in and near the Everglades.

Description

Murdannia spirata (L.) G.Brückn. is a member of the Commelinaceae family and is commonly referred to as Asiatic dewflower. It is native to the Oriental region, particularly in Indomalaya, and is found in countries such as China, India, and Southeast Asia. It has also been recorded in the conterminous 48 United States, especially in Florida, where it was first collected in the wild in 1965. The species is distributed across regions including the Andaman Islands, Assam, Bangladesh, China South-Central and Southeast, the East Himalaya, Hainan, Jawa, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Samoa, and Sri Lanka. It typically grows in moist habitats such as wet wastelands, forests, and along streams in its native range, and in Florida, it is found in palm hummocks and marshes.
