Asian rice

Oryza sativa L. is a cereal crop belonging to the grass family, Poaceae. It is the more widely cultivated of the two rice species, the other being O. glaberrima. The domestication of O. sativa is traced to the Yangtze River basin in China, with evidence dating back 13,500 to 8,200 years. The species is now cultivated and naturalized in a wide range of regions, including the Oriental, Palaearctic, and Neotropical biogeographic zones, as well as in countries such as Portugal, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. The name was first published in 1753. Discussions in botanical nomenclature have addressed the typification of the species, but no effective type has been accepted under the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants.
