Juglans major, known as Arizona Walnut, is a walnut tree native to the southwestern United States and parts of Mexico. It typically reaches heights of 15 m (50 ft) with a trunk diameter of up to 0.61 m (2 ft). This species is found at elevations between 300 and 2,130 m (1,000–7,000 ft) in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah, as well as in Mexico as far south as Guerrero. The tree is also known by the common names Arizona black walnut and Spanish name nogal cimarrón.
Description
Juglans major belongs to the Juglandaceae family and is part of the genus Juglans. Its distribution includes the U.S. states of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah, as well as several regions in Mexico. The species was first described in 1904. It is a medium-sized tree adapted to a range of elevations and is recognized for its ecological and regional significance in its native range.
