Montia fontana (L.) is a member of the Montiaceae family. It is native to regions including Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Yukon, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Parque Nacional Natural Puracé, and Parque Nacional Natural Sumapaz. It is also found in the Antarctic, Afrotropical, Australasian, Nearctic, and Neotropical regions. The species was first described in 1753. Taxonomic clarification has been complicated by the lack of a clear type specimen, with material from Lapland designated as the lectotype. The plant is associated with clean water habitats and is used as a salad plant in some areas.
