Thymelaea passerina, known as annual thymelaea, is a flowering plant in the Thymelaeaceae family. Native to central and southern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, the western Himalayas, and Xinjiang in China, it has been introduced to central North America and South Australia. This erect annual grows between 6 and 61 cm tall and is commonly found in steppes, disturbed areas, and old fields.
Description
Thymelaea passerina is an annual species that occurs in a wide range of regions, including Ontario, Quebec, Portugal, Ukraine, the United States, and parts of Europe and Asia. It was first published in 1859 by (L.) Coss. & Germ. The plant is adapted to open habitats such as steppes and disturbed ground, and it is often seen in old fields. It is known by several common names, including spurge flax, sparrow weed, and mezereon.
