The genus name Anchusa is derived from the Greek word anchousa, referencing the use of a related species, Anchusa tinctoria, for dye. The species name capensis indicates its origin from the Cape region of South Africa. It was first described in 1794.

Description

Anchusa capensis is distributed across several regions including DZ, SE, IN, NA, AU, TW, the conterminous 48 United States, Cape Provinces, Free State, Lesotho, Namibia, and Northern Provinces, as well as Oregon. It is commonly known as annual anchusa in English. This species belongs to the Boraginaceae family, which is also known as the borage family. The plant is part of the Anchusa genus, which includes other species used historically for dye production.
