Andreaea rupestris is a member of the Andreaeopsida class, often called lantern mosses due to the appearance of their dehisced sporangia. It is distributed across regions including Labrador, Québec, several islands in the Atlantic, and parts of South America and Europe. The moss typically grows on smooth, acidic rock surfaces. Its distinguishing features include acrocarpous growth, dark pigmentation, and a lack of a seta. The mature sporangia exhibit four lines of dehiscence. The gametophytic leaves have an ovate base and a more blunt apex compared to similar species, aiding in its identification.
