Helenium amarum, a member of the Asteraceae family, is an annual herb native to the south-central United States and northern Mexico. It has also been introduced to other parts of North America, Australia, and the West Indies. The plant is known by several common names, including American sneezeweed, yellowdicks, yellow sneezeweed, fiveleaf sneezeweed, and bitter sneezeweed. It was first described in 1957.

Description

Helenium amarum is a species of the genus Helenium in the daisy family, Asteraceae. It is found in regions including Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, and Mexico Northeast, as well as in the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, and parts of Central and South America. Outside its native range, it has been introduced to areas such as Australia and the West Indies. The plant is characterized by its yellow flowers and is known for its bitter taste, reflected in one of its common names, bitter sneezeweed.
