It belongs to the Dryopteridaceae family and is diploid, serving as a parent species for hybrids like Dryopteris carthusiana. It is also referred to by several other common names, including intermediate shield fern and fancy wood fern.

Description

Dryopteris intermedia is a member of the Dryopteridaceae family and is found in regions such as Labrador, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and parts of the United States. It was first described by A.Gray in 1848. This species is known for its role in hybridization, contributing to the origin of other Dryopteris species. Common names for this fern include intermediate wood fern, glandular wood fern, and common wood fern.
