Cullen americanum (L.) Rydb., commonly known as American scurfpea, is a member of the Fabaceae family. It is native to Northern Africa, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Despite its species name, which refers to the Americas, it is an introduced species in the New World. The plant is distributed across several regions in Europe, including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, as well as in parts of the conterminous 48 United States. The name was published in 1919.
Description
Cullen americanum belongs to the genus Cullen within the legume family Fabaceae. It is not native to the Americas, although it has become naturalized there. Its original range includes Northern Africa, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. The plant has been recorded in various European regions, including the British Isles, France, and the Low Countries, as well as in parts of the United States. The taxonomic history notes that a proposed lectotype for the species is not original material, as it was added to the herbarium after 1753 and lacks the relevant Species Plantarum number.
