Platanus occidentalis L., a member of the Platanaceae family, is commonly known as American Plane. It is native to the eastern and central United States, northeastern Mexico, and parts of Canada. The species can live up to 500–600 years and grow to heights exceeding 24 m. It is often referred to as sycamore in North America, though this name may refer to different species elsewhere.

Description

Platanus occidentalis is a long-lived tree species that reaches significant size, with a wide girth and tall stature. It is distributed across multiple regions, including Ontario, Quebec, the United States, and parts of Europe. The name 'sycamore' is used in North America for this species, while in the UK, it refers to a different tree. The species was first published in 1753. A note in taxonomic literature clarifies that a prior designation of a holotype was invalid due to the rules of nomenclature.
