Malus coronaria (L.) Mill., known as American crabapple, is a species in the Rosaceae family. It is native to North America, with a distribution spanning from Ontario to the conterminous 48 United States, including states like Alabama, Arkansas, and New York. This small tree or shrub grows 5–10 m tall and is characterized by its oblong to ovate leaves and corymbose inflorescence with white, pink, or premium pink petals. The pome is subglobose, yellow, and 2.5–3.5 cm in diameter. It flowers from April to June and produces mature fruits from September to November. It grows in terrestrial, seasonally green habitats, such as open areas of valleys, beside streams or roadsides, at elevations of 50–1000 m. Chromosome numbers include 2n = 34, 51, 68.

Description

Malus coronaria is a small tree or shrub in the Rosaceae family, native to North America. It is found in Ontario, the conterminous 48 United States, and several southern and midwestern states. The species grows in terrestrial, seasonally green habitats, including open areas of valleys, beside streams or roadsides, at elevations of 50–1000 m. It flowers from April to June and produces mature fruits from September to November. The plant has leaves that are oblong to ovate, with a cordate, rounded, or cuneate base and an acute, rounded, or obtuse apex. The inflorescence is corymbose, with 4–6 flowers, and the pome is subglobose, yellow, and 2.5–3.5 cm in diameter. Chromosome numbers are 2n = 34, 51, 68.
