This plant is native to temperate and arctic regions of Asia and North America. It is distributed across Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Vermont-US, Alabama, and Alaska. It was first described in 1846 and is found in moist habitats such as streams and bottomlands.
