Calystegia silvatica, known as American Bellbine, is a vigorous climbing plant native to southern Europe. It was introduced to other regions as an ornamental garden plant. A subspecies, Calystegia silvatica subsp. fraterniflora, is native to North America.

Description

Calystegia silvatica is a member of the Convolvulaceae family and is the largest species of bindweed. It is a strong climber and was first described in 1844 by Griseb. The plant is found in several European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as in Portugal, Ireland, and parts of the United States like Vermont. The subspecies Calystegia silvatica subsp. fraterniflora is native to North America. This species is valued for its ornamental qualities, which led to its introduction in various regions outside its natural range.
