The species is specifically found in Western Australia. The scientific name was established in 1986 by L.A.S. Johnson and B.G. Briggs, who reclassified the species originally described by Nees. The genus Alexgeorgea is named in honor of Alex George, a prominent Australian botanist known for his work on the flora of Western Australia.
