Claytonia sarmentosa, a member of the Montiaceae family, is a flowering plant native to the mountainous regions of the Lake Baikal area, eastern Siberia, and northwestern North America, including Alaska, Yukon, and northern British Columbia. It is known as Alaska spring beauty and was first described in 1829 by C.A.Mey. The species occurs in British Columbia, Yukon, Alaska, Kamchatka, Magadan, and globally in other regions. Taxonomic confusion has existed between this species and Claytonia arctica and C. scammaniana. A 2006 taxonomic revision clarified its status by analyzing populations from the Udokan Mountains and comparing them with Alaskan specimens.

Taxonomic confusion with Claytonia arctica and C. scammaniana has been noted, but a 2006 revision helped clarify its classification through the analysis of Udokan Mountains populations and comparison with Alaskan material.
