Hillebrandia sandwicensis is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant native to the Hawaiian Islands. It is commonly known as ʻakaʻakaʻawa and pua maka nui. The genus is named after William Hillebrand, a German physician.

Description

Hillebrandia sandwicensis, described by Oliv. in 1866, belongs to the Begoniaceae family. It is endemic to Hawaii and is one of the few species in the genus Hillebrandia. The plant is known by the Hawaiian common names ʻakaʻakaʻawa and pua maka nui. The genus name commemorates William Hillebrand, a German physician who contributed to the study of Hawaiian flora.
