It is the only species in its genus adapted to temperate climates, distinguishing it from other tropical Ailanthus species. The tree is widely distributed across various regions, including British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, the Açores, Madeira, and parts of Portugal, as well as in NO, SE, TR, RU, and ZA. First published in 1916, it is commonly known as the tree of heaven or ailanthus tree in English.

Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle is a member of the Simaroubaceae family and is native to northeast, central China, and Taiwan. It is a deciduous tree that thrives in temperate climates, unlike other Ailanthus species that are typically tropical. The species has been documented in regions such as British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, the Açores, Madeira, and several Portuguese islands, as well as in parts of Northern Europe, Southeastern Europe, Turkey, Russia, and South Africa. First published in 1916, it is known by the common name 'tree of heaven' or 'ailanthus tree' in English.
