It is found in the Guainía region and in northern and west-central Brazil, as well as in Colombia, Guyana, and Venezuela. The species was formally published in 1984 by Judd, who reclassified it from earlier work by Huber. This species contributes to the biodiversity of the Ericaceae family in the Neotropical region.
