Afrocarpus mannii is an evergreen coniferous tree native to the Afromontane forests of São Tomé Island in the Gulf of Guinea. It is found growing on Pico de São Tomé at altitudes ranging from 1,300 m to 2,024 m. This species is the only Gymnosperm present on São Tomé e Príncipe and was previously classified under the genus Podocarpus as Podocarpus mannii.
Description
Afrocarpus mannii belongs to the Podocarpaceae family and is native to the high-altitude Afromontane forests of São Tomé Island. It grows specifically on Pico de São Tomé, from 1,300 m to the summit at 2,024 m. The species is notable as the sole Gymnosperm found on São Tomé e Príncipe. It was reclassified from Podocarpus to Afrocarpus in 1989. The genus Afrocarpus is characterized by its coniferous, evergreen trees, and this species is a representative of that group in the region.
