It was first described by Linnaeus in 1753 and is widely distributed across regions including Portugal, Belgium, the United States, and parts of Europe, Asia, and South America. The species is also known as southern adder's-tongue or adder's-tongue fern.

Ophioglossum vulgatum is a member of the Ophioglossaceae family, a group of ferns characterized by unique morphological features. Its distribution spans from the Baltic States to the Altay region and includes countries such as Albania, Algeria, and Argentina South.
