The species is distributed across various regions in Africa, such as Angola, Cabinda, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Zaïre. It was first published in 1849 by the botanist Benth. The plant is also known by the common name Adam's-apple-flower in English.
