Hypoxis villosa ist ein Mitglied der Familie Hypoxidaceae, früher in die Liliaceae oder Amaryllidaceae eingeordnet. Sie ist in den südafrikanischen Provinzen Kap, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho und Swaziland verbreitet. Die wissenschaftliche Beschreibung der Art erfolgte 1782 durch L.f.
